Demurrage and detention

What is Demurrage and detention?

Demurrage and detention are charges for using a container longer than the free days granted by the shipping line.

Also called: container rent, demurrage, detention

Demurrage is charged when a full container stays too long in the terminal – for example because customs clearance or collection is delayed.

Detention is charged when the container has been collected but is not returned empty within the deadline.

Charges often increase per day. Complete documents, fast clearance and an agreed delivery slot are the best protection.
