Air Waybill (AWB)

What is Air Waybill (AWB)?

The Air Waybill (AWB) is the transport document for air freight. It evidences the contract of carriage and carries an 11-digit number used for tracking.

Also called: AWB, air consignment note

The AWB number consists of a three-digit airline prefix and an eight-digit serial number. With it, the shipment can be tracked with the airline.

For consolidated shipments, the forwarder issues a Master AWB for the whole consignment and a House AWB for each individual shipment.

An AWB is not a negotiable document – unlike a bill of lading in ocean freight.
