Cabotage

What is Cabotage?

Cabotage is domestic road haulage in an EU country carried out by a haulier from another country. It is allowed to a limited extent after an international trip.

Also called: domestic haulage by foreign hauliers

After an international delivery, a foreign truck may carry out up to three domestic transports in the country where it was unloaded, within seven days.

The EU Mobility Package also introduced a four-day cooling-off period before the same vehicle may do cabotage in that country again. Trips must be documented with consignment notes.

For shippers, a rate that seems too low can be a sign of illegal cabotage. Choose hauliers that follow the rules.
