Empty running
What is Empty running?
Empty running means driving without cargo – for example when a truck returns empty after a delivery or drives empty to its next collection.
Also called: empty kilometres, backhaul, return load
Empty running costs fuel, time and driver wages without earning revenue. That is why a trip with no return load can be more expensive than the same trip in the opposite direction.
Carriers plan routes and combine jobs to avoid empty running. It is good for both price and CO₂.
