Driving and rest times

What is Driving and rest times?

EU rules on driving and rest times set how long a truck driver may drive and how much rest is required. In practice they determine how far a truck can travel in a day.

Also called: driving time, rest period, tachograph

The main rules for trucks above 3.5 tonnes:

  • Maximum 9 hours of driving per day (10 hours twice a week).
  • A 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving.
  • Maximum 56 hours of driving per week and 90 hours over two weeks.
  • Normally 11 hours of daily rest and 45 hours of weekly rest.

These rules are why long trips are often planned with two drivers or an overnight stop. Driving is recorded by a tachograph.
