Preferential origin

What is Preferential origin?

Preferential origin means that goods meet the rules of a trade agreement and can therefore be imported at a reduced or zero duty rate.

Also called: origin, EUR.1, free trade agreement

The EU has free trade agreements with many countries, such as the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Canada and Japan. The goods must meet the agreement's rules of origin, and this must be documented – typically with a statement on origin on the invoice or an EUR.1 certificate.

To make out statements on origin for larger shipments, the exporter often needs to be registered in the EU REX system. Without valid proof, full duty is payable.
