Carrier liability
What is Carrier liability?
Carrier liability is the carrier's responsibility for loss, damage and delay. In international road transport it follows the CMR Convention and is limited per kilo.
Also called: liability limit, CMR liability
Under CMR the carrier is liable for the goods from takeover to delivery. Compensation is as a rule limited to 8.33 SDR per kilo of gross weight of the damaged or lost goods.
For light but valuable goods this can be far below the actual value. Consider cargo insurance or agree a higher declared value in the consignment note.
In Denmark, the Danish CMR Act also applies to a large extent to domestic road transport.
