Shipper, consignee and carrier

What is Shipper, consignee and carrier?

The three parties to a contract of carriage: the shipper sends the goods, the carrier transports them and the consignee receives them.

Also called: shipper, consignee, carrier, haulier

The shipper enters into the contract of carriage and must give correct information about the goods. The carrier performs or arranges the transport and is liable for the goods along the way. The consignee is named in the consignment note as the party to receive the goods.

A forwarder can act as an intermediary for the customer – or take on the role of carrier itself. This affects liability, so it should be clear from the agreement.
